We’ve invented a recycling product that allows us to divide a 2- can kitchen system into 3 parts. We conveniently divert 70% of our compost material out of our landfill contributions and have developed a green technology business in the process. The Divider has allowed us to comply with the new California Mandate that went into effect in January 2022 (SB 1383 - divert compost out of landfill 75% by 2025 to reduce GHG emissions). The Compost and Recycle Divider (T-CaRD) is adjustable and can be used in refuse cans throughout the house, i.e., kitchen, bathroom, office, etc. By dividing one can into two parts, it aids the average household in properly disposing of refuse, in turn aiding the cities and counties with compliance of the new California mandate. As many have seen, local Jurisdictions have provided households with a countertop pail aiding in proper composting. We found the pail too small to accommodate all that should be composted, i.e., tissue, paper towels, paper towel rolls, paper food containers, and more. Once the small pails are filled, households revert to dumping the compost into their landfill container. With the convenience of the T-CaRD, we have decreased our landfill contribution by 70%. We now use a 20-gal can, down from a 65-gal, and rarely fill that on a weekly basis. In addition, using the new 3-part system frees up counter space by eliminating the countertop crock. Through a combination of innovation, technology, awareness, and convenience, we can achieve California’s goal.
